Region of Waterloo Bike Share Initiative
The Region of Waterloo is expected to experience significant growth in the future, and one of the greatest challenges will be providing residents with sustainable transportation options.
Our mission is to advocate for a public bicycle share system and improved cycling infrastructure in the Region of Waterloo. Cycling and bicycle share systems offer a variety of benefits, and can provide residents with a safe, affordable, and efficient alternative to driving.
As one of the world's most innovative communities, it is crucial that Waterloo Region invest in alternative transportation options while setting a precedent for sustainability across the globe.
Benefits of Cycling and Bike Share Systems
Cycling is a sustainable transportation mode and provides an attractive alternative to driving. In order to make cycling a viable transportation option, the Region of Waterloo should consider implementing a public bicycle share system while improving other cycling infrastructure, which could:
- Replace single occupant vehicle trips and reduce traffic congestion and need for parking
- Complement walking and transit use, relieving pressure on at capacity transit lines
- Provide opportunity for physical activity, leading to various health benefits
-
Improve air quality, as cycling emits zero greenhouse gas emissions
-
Provide an affordable and accessible transportation option, especially among students and low-income individuals
- Provide a convenient, enjoyable, and efficient way to make short trips
- Increase cycling by making the bicycle an option for one-way trips
-
Use innovative technologies to reduce theft and create a user-friendly system
- Allow individuals to cycle for transportation without worrying about bicycle theft and maintenance, issues often associated with personal bicycle ownership
- Create part-time and full-time employment opportunities which focus on sustainability and green technologies
- Create a stronger cycling culture while ensuring cycling becomes an accepted and widely used transportation option
-
Foster partnerships between local organizations, businesses, community groups, and municipalities
